It was evident to all that the real reason for doing this was to cut staff, and blame the closure of parishes on the local communities, instead of the diocesan brass. It doesn’t work. But, neither does whatever they’ve been doing. If they end up selling off church buildings, you can bet they will do everything they can to prevent the SSPX from coming in.
