Spanish police have discovered that Alfonso Benito López, a Canon of Valencia Cathedral, spent the night before he was murdered with a 34-year-old man who has a recognised degree of intellectual disability of 43%.
The next day, Benito was killed by another man, a Peruvian homosexual, who is currently in custody.
Originally, Benito met the disabled man six months ago after approaching him while he was loitering around a bus station in Valencia. This was Benito's way of recruiting the men he later took home for homosexual encounters.
Benito paid the disabled man to travel almost 700 kilometres from his home town to Valencia on 20 January. In Valencia, he was picked up by Benito and a Romanian man who often helped Benito, inside and outside his home, and accompanied him in times of danger.
The disabled man spent the night in Benito's flat. When he was already in bed, Benito appeared and made homosexual advances, which led to a "small sexual encounter", he told police.
