Notre-Dame de Paris: Heritage Committee Rejects the creation of 'Contemporary' Stained Glass Windows

On Thursday, the French 'National Commission for Heritage and Architecture' voted unanimously against the plan to replace some of the cathedral's 19th century stained glass windows with six 'contemporary' ones [= ugly].

The windows project was initiated by the Archbishop of Paris, Mgr Laurent Ulrich, and Emmanuel Macron.

The 19th century windows were designed by Eugène Viollet le Duc. They were NOT damaged by the fire.

The vote was based on the International Charter for the Conservation and Restoration of Monuments, known as the Venice Charter, adopted by France in 1965. It recommends that no part of a monument should be destroyed.

But Bernard Blistène, the chairman of the artistic commission, doesn't accept the vote and will continue his procedure for the 'contemporary' stained glass windows. He had selected the finalists for the glass.

Imagine how the restoration of Notre Dame would have looked had the modernist arch-bishop still controlled the building.
