After a secret trial, Father Pierre de Maillard, 56, was sentenced on June 2 to twenty years in prison by the Vendée Assize Court for the rape and sexual assault of a total of sixteen boys and eleven girls. Maillard must spend at least 13 years in prison. Before the jury retired to deliberate, Maillard was quoted by his lawyers as saying: "I apologise, I am sorry, I apologise, I am sorry".
