Chicago Cardinal: Don't Kneel for Communion Because of "Community Procession"

🌈 Cardinal Blaise Cupich of Chicago, USA, published a note on the liturgy on December 11, mainly to discourage kneeling to receive Holy Communion.

Among many words, the main sentence is this: "The norm established by Holy See for the universal church and approved by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops is for the faithful to process together as an expression of their coming forward as the Body of Christ and to receive Holy Communion standing."

And, "Certainly reverence can and should be expressed by bowing before the reception of Holy Communion, but no one should engage in a gesture that calls attention to oneself or disrupts the flow of the procession."

IDK, maybe it’s the priestly order that practices Eucharistic procession. The Canons, at St. John Cantius, Chicago, does not practice but the SSPX does as does the NO. Before V2 in America you’d get up on your own and go to communion. No ushers needed! Today, depending where you attend Mass the ushers stand at the end of the pew as a ‘clue, when its your turn to get up. The younger generation just doest know any different.

In the parish where I grew up, “row by row” distribution didn’t come around until the early 90s, but now, hardly anyone remembers any other way.

There is no procession, this concept is a trick to mess with our mind; the event is the individual reception of the Blessed Sacrament.

Cardinal Cupich, in fact, hates actual Eucharistic processions.

More from the philistines.

You would think that the continuing decline in mass attendance is more than sufficient to make the procession wisk by. I suggest banners outside each Chicago church, "Four Eucharistic ministers, no waiting" to attract more attendance.

He warns against "calling attention to oneself". What he really tries to abolish is "calling attention to" Our Blessed Lord.

Kneeling was the norm so it has passed the scrutiny of the Saints. “Only a dead fish goes with the flow”
