The Dominican Province of Northern Italy is growing, writes the homosex outlet Avvenire.it.
This development began about six years ago although “even Francis has prayed for our growth” according to Prior Daniele Drago, 47.
Every year about 16 men enter the postulancy, of whom an average of seven are admitted to the novitiate. Many come from broken homes and have no Catholic background.
There are about 170 religious in the province, of whom more than 40 are in formation. There are 14 monasteries, including San Domenico in Bologna, where St Dominic of Guzmán (+1221), the founder, rests.
95% of the new members are Italians. Some came from the diocesan clergy.
Departures during the nine years of formation are rare. The average age of the friars has fallen to 55. The total number of religious is increasing despite the numerous deaths.
