Samoa Officially Becomes a Christian State

In early June, 43 of the 49 representatives in Samoa's Parliament voted in favour of changing Article 1 of the constitution, which now reads, “Samoa is a Christian nation founded of God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.”

The Parliament amended the constitution in order to transform the country from a secular to a Christian state. An important motivation for this step was to protect the country from Western cultural imperialism. 98 % of Samoa’s population identify as Christian. 20% are Catholic.
