New Toronto Archbishop: Local Catholics Hopeful

Francis appointed on February 11, Montreal Auxiliary Bishop Frank Leo, 51, as Archbishop of Toronto, succeeding Cardinal Thomas Collins, 76. Toronto has 2M Catholics and is usually led by a cardinal.

Leo is Canada’s youngest Latin-rite bishop. Only consecrated in September 2022, he has served as general secretary of the Canadian bishops, and has spent time as a Vatican diplomat.

Toronto blogger David Domet (VoxCantor.Blogspot.com) is pleased with Leo’s appointment compared to other possible candidates.

Leo has an enormous task ahead of him, he writes: “Many Toronto priests are demoralised, and many have been 'canceled' by the Collins regime."

Others have been thrown under the bus of political correctness and media mobs. In addition, Mass attendance and parish sustainability has been ruined, dozens of churches are to be closed, and there is a cesspool within the chancery.

However, Leo is said to have a good relationship with the secretary of the Congregation for Bishops, Archbishop lson de Jesus Montanari, a buddy of Francis.

Just an addition- I read his letter he wrote to the faithful of Toronto, his letter of introduction so to speak. It reads like that a pre-Vatican II new Archbishop might have written. The wording and topics are impressive, and sound so Catholic. Happilly, not a single word about homosexuals, LGBTQ's, TRANs, etc. etc. any any other trash. His letter sounds Catholic, but wel'll have to see. From what …More

I didn't see anything in this brief profile to give faithful Catholics anything to be hopeful about. If this new Archbishop Leo is friends with, Archbishop lson de Jesus Montanari, a buddy of Francis, that is not a good sign. And I read somewhere, isn't Archbishop lson de Jesus Montanari gay? I know there was some monsignor or bishop who resigned suprisingly last week who was gay, and had a "boyfriend …More

I'm not sure, but Archbishop lson de Jesus Montanari's name looks familiar regarding that report.
I don't expect anything good from Francis or his appointments. If something good happens, it's a nice surprise. But I don't expect anything.

Let's not kid anyone, as with Cardinal Wilton before him, I suspect this hand-picked Francis appointee will have a red zucchetto very soon. Hope is good, however....
I wish Toronto's '2 million' Catholics well (a recent study suggested only 14% Canadians regularly attend Sunday mass - 'nominal' and Catholic should never really be considered equal partners).
