Cardinal Gambetti and the canons of St Peter’s celebrated on June 3 a penitential liturgy at the high altar after a Russian-Polish man, 34, who was predictably described by the oligarch media as "mentally disturbed" climbed on top of it and stripped naked late the previous afternoon. But the main culprit for this is Gambetti, who left the basilica without the necessary security personnel.

Referring to the desecration carried out on June 1, the cardinal pointed out that it is this “structure of sin” that pushed the man “to make an inappropriate and deplorable gesture,” ACI Prensa reported.
“We are here to tell the Lord that we recognize that this structure of sin conditions the actions of God’s people. Lord, we ask your forgiveness, purify us,” Gambetti said.More
