Pope Francis has spread the rumor that whistleblower Archbishop Carlo Viganò published his August 2018 statement because he "was paid".
Speaking to Televista (May 28) he again evidently attempted to create confusion.
Referring to the journalists he first spreads gossip, "Some of you have written that this was paid". But then he turns the other way, "I don't know."
First, Viganò did not publish his statement through the rich oligarch media. Further he is from a rich family and in no need of money.

"was paid" is a nasty snide remark on the person in question; such language is unbecoming of a pope; maybe "pride comes before the fall"

God bless Archbishop Viganò. Only one real man in the story...not Francis lol

I believe Archbishop Vigano

The arguments of Pope Francis against his opponents seem never from facts or Truth. Rather, they are accusations of rigidity or less than moral motivations (e.g., money).

Finally the pope will talk about Viganò. Why now? What has changed?

The story begins this past August, when former papal nuncio Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò released a revelatory letter that detailed how Pope Francis was well aware of ex-Cardinal McCarrick’s heinous clerical abuse. This scathing letter divulged that Pope Francis not only lifted sanctions placed on the sexual predator by Pope Benedict XVI, but also covered for him, even making McCarrick his “trusted counsellor.”

While many have discredited the 11-page epistle merely as a far-right tactic to oppose the Jesuit Pope, this report is undoubtedly concerning, especially since the Vatican has remained silent (until now) and neither denied nor addressed these claims. This has left many demanding further responses from the pontiff, who has instead deferred to “silence and prayer” during these most tumultuous times.

We’ve seen this MO before now. Dig in. Hunker down. Ride it out. This has become Standard Operating Procedure for people in power who are facing scandal. And that has been true for HH as well...untill now.

Something is going on. For Francis to have made these unsubstantiated accusations tell me that the noose is tightening. Has the fawning liberal media turned the corner on their adulation of Francis? Referring to the journalists the pope states, "Some of you have written that this was paid". Despite his liberal leftist leaning (see: Liberation Theology) and his glowing support of the LGBTQ community mob, I sense that even his supportive media has had enough of this man.

I have a question. To maintain the appearance of journalistic integrity we need to check sources and so we must know who were the journalists who wrote that Viganò was paid, Your Holiness? Also, how much was Viganò paid, Your Holiness? 😲

Francis has not yet granted an interview to any media known for being Catholic. Phil Lawler wrote about the "Televisa interview" that "the pontiff came dangerously close to saying that he knew journalists would not question him too closely".
