2023 and 2024: No One Dared to Ask Francis to Allow the Roman Rite
On 25 October, Marquant told ApNews.com that Cardinal Burke had given the letter to Pope Leo XIV during an audience on 22 August. Leo XIV granted permission.
Francis had also allowed Latin Masses to be celebrated in the basilica, even after his crackdown in 2021, but only by low-ranking priests.
Marquant said that in 2023 and 2024, they could not find anyone willing to approach Francis to ask permission.
During Mass on Saturday, Cardinal Burke did not mention Pope Francis, his crackdown, or Pope Leo XIV in his homily. Instead, he spoke repeatedly about Benedict XVI and the Motu Proprio Summorum Pontificum, treating it as if it were still in force.
The Cardinal said that through Benedict’s reform, 'the whole Church is maturing in an ever deeper understanding and love for the great gift of the sacred liturgy, as it has been handed down to us in an unbroken line from the Apostolic Tradition, from the Apostles and their successors'.
