Paul Badde (* 10. März 1948 in Breyell-Schaag; † 10. November 2025 in Manoppello, Italien) war ein deutscher Sachbuchautor, Journalist und Filmemacher.
Paul Badde studierte, nach dem Besuch eines Humanistischen Gymnasiums, Philosophie und Soziologie an der Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg und an der Universität Frankfurt am Main Kunstgeschichte, Geschichte und Politik. Zwischen dem Ersten und Zweiten Staatsexamen war er ab März 1979 Redakteur und Ressortleiter bei der Satirezeitschrift pardon, woran sich ein dreijähriger Schuldienst als Lehrer an der Schillerschule in Frankfurt-Sachsenhausen und die freie Mitarbeit bei der Frankfurter Allgemeinen Zeitung, der Zeit, der Welt und der Neuen Zürcher Zeitung anschlossen. Paul Badde (Schaag, March 10, 1948 – Manoppello, November 10, 2025) was a German essayist, journalist, and filmmaker. He was a Vatican correspondent for Die Welt and co-editor of the monthly Vatican Magazine. He became known for declaring that the Veil of Veronica is a type of fabric found only in the tombs of the Egyptian pharaohs. On January 16, 2016, together with Jesuit Heinrich Pfeiffer, he participated in the historical reenactment of the procession of the Holy Face of Manoppello from St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican to the Church of Santo Spirito in Sassia.
Biography
After attending a humanities high school, Paul Badde studied philosophy and sociology at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität of Freiburg and art history, history, and politics at the University of Frankfurt am Main. Between his first and second state exams, from March 1979 he served as editor and department head of the satirical magazine "pardon." This experience was followed by three years of teaching at the Schiller School in Frankfurt-Sachsenhausen and freelance work for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Die Zeit, Die Welt, and the Neue Zürcher Zeitung. From February 1988, he was a reporter and editor for the Munich-based magazine F.A.Z. From 2000 to 2013, he worked as a correspondent for the daily newspaper Die Welt, first in Jerusalem, then in Rome and the Vatican.
From early 2007 until June 2022, Badde was co-editor of the monthly Vatican Magazine. Since 2008, he has been president of the Botschaft von Fátima, whose primary goal is to spread the message of Fatima and which supports aid projects for persecuted Christians and children in South America. He also worked for the news agency CNA Deutsch, kath.net and, since 2013, has also been an author and correspondent for the television channel EWTN Deutschland.

Paul Badde, author of many well-known books such as “Benedict Up Close,” “The Face of God,” and “The True Icon,” died early Monday morning at the age of 77 after a long illness. Badde was also a veteran contributor to EWTN and CNA Deutsch, CNA’s German-language news partner.
Badde was born on March 10, 1948, in Schaag, Germany, a small village on the Lower Rhine. He studied philosophy and sociology in Freiburg as well as art history, history, and political science in Frankfurt. Before embarking on a journalistic career, Badde worked as a teacher for several years.
As a journalist, he was known for his work at the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and later at Die Welt. Badde served for many years as a Jerusalem correspondent before moving to Rome. He was also one of the founding editors of Vatican Magazine.
As reported by Die Tagespost, Badde died in his beloved Manoppello in the Italian Abruzzo region. Paul and his wife, Ellen, had five children.

Divenne noto per aver dichiarato che il velo della Veronica è un tipo di tessuto presente solo nelle tombe dei faraoni egizi. Il 16 gennaio 2016, insieme al gesuita Heinrich Pfeiffer, ha partecipato alla rievocazione storica della processione del Volto Santo di Manoppello dalla Basilica di San Pietro in Vaticano alla Chiesa di Santo Spirito in Sassia.
Dopo aver frequentato un ginnasio umanistico, Paul Badde ha studiato filosofia e sociologia alla Albert-Ludwigs-Universität di Friburgo e storia dell'arte, storia e politica all'Università di Francoforte sul Meno.
