Well, for several reasons, so I think it best if I simply copy the email which I sent to this priest on 8 January 2025 – no reply has been received at this time of writing. That’s not unusual: indeed, it is commonplace for the bishops and priests of Scotland to ignore letters of concern about their behaviour/lack of due diligence regarding matters of Catholic Faith and Morals. Contempt for lay people who are not on [the Modernist] message is par for the course here. Modernism, remember, being the “synthesis of all the heresies” (Pope Saint Pius X) this is, of course, scandalous. For the Scottish bishops, however, that “synthesis of all heresies” is now, shockingly, the Catholic religion.
My Email to Rev Colum Martin follows:
I am writing to you following a recent telephone conversation with a gentleman who lives in the Diocese of Motherwell. He is of the older generation and full of reverence for priests. I do not share his reverence because of ordination only, any more than I respect doctors just because they have a medical degree. Think Dr Harold Shipman.
Having been made aware of your “brush with the law” (Celtic supporter from Motherwell caught with smoke bombs is given unpaid work ) and related juvenile devotion to Celtic football team, even before I read your disgraceful tweets on the Rangers blog (see below) I was of the opinion that you should never have been ordained. The author of the Rangers blog below can be excused for not getting the name of the Church right since Catholics show equal ignorance in this regard – check the facts (christianorder.com/files/HOW DID THE CATHOLIC CHURCH GET HER NAME.pdf)
but they are right to be scandalised at the shocking bad language and un-Christian comments, not to mention the predictable political views, all spouted by a “trainee Catholic priest”. CELTIC FOOTBALL CLUB’S VISIT TO JESUIT ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH IN ROME ARRANGED BY A SECTARIAN RACIST BIGOTED PRIEST.
It is my intention to post the above information onto the popular [ ] Catholic blog, Gloria TV, at some point in the near future, since – I believe – you have been appointed chaplain to a school in Motherwell Diocese. The young, who are not being taught anything like the Catholic Faith, are now to be under the influence of a man who [in my considered opinion] should never have been ordained to the priesthood, whose language is well suited to the football field but not to any Catholic institution. A man who is very far removed from the kind of edifying religious and moral example so essential in the formation of young Catholics.

I did, naively, hope that he might reply to the effect that he regretted his past behaviour, his ridiculous and childish devotion to Celtic Football Club (to the point where he broke the law for goodness’ sake) and that he now realises that he must not continue to poison the minds and souls of the young students placed in his care. That would have given me good reason to withhold/postpone this article. But no, nothing. Thus, my Confirmation duty forces me to use whatever means available to warn others about this latest scandal in the Diocese of Motherwell.
I believe there is another priest-scandal in the pipeline in that poor diocese, so let me ask readers to spread this warning to any family and friends in the Motherwell diocese, and for prayers, too, for this poorly formed clergyman (I can’t bring myself to use the title “Father” which is a reminder that our priest is the “Father of our souls” – sadly, too many of them are so ignorant of the Faith themselves and are, as in this case, a cause of such serious scandal, that they have nothing of religious, spiritual or moral value to offer the laity these days. If they can confect the Eucharist and absolve sins, then for that we thank God. But we avoid their opinions, hear their homilies with a sceptical ear, note their worldliness, and keep ourselves well educated in the Faith to recognise any heresies: 'I know by experience that the greatest punishment that can befall a people is a bad priest. It is best to leave a town without a priest than to send one who is unworthy. If God does not send me men who are truly called, God himself will have to take care of the men and souls by means of his angels. A call is God's gift. I must not bring the unworthy into the sheepfold to destroy it instead of tending it.'

@Klaus Elmar Müller - the school curriculum in Scottish schools is very worrying, and the fact that Catholic schools follow the Government requirements about moral topics, such as sex education etc should concern Catholic parents who send their children to Catholic schools to be taught the Faith and (true) Morals. This is not spelt out in the school's paperwork/website. The usual statements about the "mission" of the Catholic schools list "Gospel values" which in fact means human "values" such as: "respect, tolerance, diversity, equality" etc. Those are not Gospel values; self-sacrifice is a Gospel value, putting Christ first is a Gospel value, Spreading the Catholic Faith is a Gospel value and other imperatives from the Scriptures and Tradition which are never mentioned by priests and so-called Catholic educators.
As for this priest's behaviour as a student priest (who knows if he continues to misbehave in the same way) at football matches, well, the fact that he spent a night in jail after arrest awaiting a court hearing and subsequently pleading guilty and being given a punishment, means that he fell foul of the law. Although, in Scotland, anyone who is sentenced to less than 6 months, has their record wiped after two years, the fact that this happened and did not prevent him being ordained to the Catholic priesthood does, as so many have said to me privately, reveal the shockingly low standards for acceptance into seminary. For those of you who may not know this, Scotland has no seminaries at all in the country - we used to have several (five, I think) but they are all now closed and we only have the Scots College in Rome. That speaks for itself.
It is not wrong to expose this kind of shocking behaviour on the part of priests - Rev Martin's disgraceful tweets have scandalised Protestants, which means he has made it all the more difficult for them to see the beauty of the Catholic Faith. False charity with concern only about this man's feelings, is not pleasing to God - Our Lord warned about millstones/drowning for those who cause scandal to the young and you should recognise the fact that this priest who has been given a important role in a Catholic secondary school in his diocese must be exposed as a danger, not just to the young in his care, but to himself. Read the quote in my original article, from St Anthony Mary Claret again and then decide what is more important - hiding this priest's dreadful behaviour from public view, given that he failed to reply to me privately, or protecting the young?

@Klaus Elmar Müller - you are into this rather silly game of alleging me to be "judgmental" - well, blame the archbishop who confirmed me and left my peers and me in no doubt of our duty to correct error, publicly when necessary. It stayed with me all these years so unless you can find somewhere where I said that this priest is going to Hell, you are failing to understand what "judgmental" means. But listen, I'm guessing that your mind is fixed on the notion of false charity so I'm not going to discuss any more with you. I'll just answer your question before I go - unless you think the souls of the pupils at the school where this priest is chaplain don't matter, then, no, I have not needlessly diminished the reputation of this priest. My guess is that he will be revealing his "Celtic" language etc to the pupils who will not be impressed. At least, not the more intelligent students.

@English Catholic - many thanks for pointing out that I did not spread this article around the world - I wouldn't know how to do that, but it seems that it has been picked up by at least 34 foreign outlets. And I've just had an email from a friend who sent it to her own contacts via WhatsApp (at least one of whom is a woman in the Diocese of Motherwell and she highly praised the article). The recipients of the WhatsApp have spread the link far and wide, as well. Hopefully, it will reach the bishop - no point in my unworthy self sending it because my communications are immediately binned, from past experience. And anyway, he's not going to act on it - that I know from previous experience but it's good if they are reminded that we're not all unthinking sheep, with apologies to real sheep (sheep are very intelligent - they can discern which shepherds to follow and which to avoid!)

@Klaus Elmar Müller - the problem with this accusation of judgmentalism is that it goes round in circles. YOU are judging me - not permitting any possible good motivation and you are also not making any sense, even common sense. For Christian teaching on judgmentalism prohibits making a final judgment on any soul - I have not judged Rev Martin's soul, merely his public actions and words. You are totally misunderstanding the meaning of judgmentalism. If we were truly not permitted to judge anyone's words and actions, the entire police and court system would have to be closed down and we could never ever express disapproval of any words and actions. Isn't this why so many people failed to report child abuse by priests in the past? Because they (rather stupidly) imagined that just because a man is ordained, he has a right to speak and act as he chooses and no Catholic will condemn those words and actions?
I know that you will persist in going round in circles, so this comment and any others which I may choose to post to correct you, is really intended for others, of a more open and reasonable mindset.
@Klaus Elmar Müller Some of us think that a man who behaves, publicly, in a completely un-Christian manner and then applies for the seminary is deceitful. To say the least. In any case, the principle is what I was pointing out - contrary to what you seem to think, it is not, in and of itself, wrong to publicly correct another person, especially a person in a public and trusted role, who has publicly caused scandal. It is really very clear and very simple. Indeed, we have a duty to correct error especially when caused by priests. Pity you cannot grasp that central issue.
