Francis chose Monsignor Mackinlay to attend the Vatican synods in 2023 and 2024 and handpicked him to help with the drafting of the final document. He supports the ordination of women and homosexual ideology.
In October 2023, Mackinlay told NcrOnline.org that he is "glad" about the discussions on invalid ordination of women: "And if it were to be that the outcome was for ordination to the diaconate to be open to women, I'd certainly welcome that."
When asked about tensions concerning the pro-homosexual Cardinals Timothy Radcliffe and Jean-Claude Hollerich, Bishop Mackinlay replied: "Cardinal Hollerich has been outstanding and Father Timothy Radcliffe was an inspired choice, both for leading the retreat and for his contributions."
In November 2023, Bishop Mackinlay lamented that references to “LGBT people" were dropped at the end of the synod. "The document is very imperfect," he told Katholisch.de, as it "softens in many respects". He was disappointed that the document gave the impression that homosexuality had barely been discussed.
At a Vatican press conference in October 2024, Bishop Mackinlay described the document Fiducia Supplicans, which concerns the "blessing" of homosexuals, as a "significant step forward". Contrary to the facts, he claimed that the document "was a result of the Synod on Synodality".
As expected, he also expressed "pastoral openness" towards those in "irregular marriage situations" [= adulterers] during the synods.
