Beyond Heretical: Even Cardinal Re Opposed Wilmer

Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, dean of cardinals who never harboured serious religious convictions, has asked Francis not to appoint Hildesheim Bishop Heiner Wilmer, 61, as prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

According to IlMessaggero.it (24 January), there is a "conservative front" against Wilmer and paleo-liberal Re is only "one of many" who oppose him.

Edward Pentin writes (Twitter.com) that some twenty cardinals and several bishops last month advised Francis against promoting Wilmer, accusing him of being "beyond heresy". But after Benedict's death, Wilmer is reportedly back in play.

According to Hilary White, Francis is using the old trial-balloon-test by offering "the worst thing imaginable, then when we've had a good wail, switch it out at the last second to something seen as less bad. Then everyone's relieved we only got a beating instead of a firing squad,” she writes.

Bishop Heiner Wilmer, who has been a vocal backer of the German Synodal Way’s most controversial proposals, is reportedly Pope Francis’s ‘probable’ pick to head the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith

Bergoglio will have huge opposition if this goes thru, and even more so to the "Francis agenda". Lastly, the "Francis agenda and legacy" will be so repudiated at the next convlave, that there won't be a "Francis II".

Honestly I am more worried about who we could get instead. The fact that Francis might consider this bate and switch necessary to pave the way for Scicluna or someone like him is at least reassuring in that opposition to suh a figure would otherwise be strong.

Hopefully the opposition to his erratic leadership will be so inflamed by this that a mildly less bad pick won't work and will instead backfire.
