Francis Praises Pioneer of Argentinian Liberation Theology

Last weekend, Francis wrote a condolence note for the death of the pioneer of the secularising Liberation Theology in Argentina, Father Julian Zini, +80, which was read on national television.

Zini died of cancer on August 16. He was also a poet and singer. “I consider him one of the great ‘Poets of the People,’ a creator of song, of life, of beauty,” Francis wrote, "To Father Julian, ‘a thank you as big as your heart deserves’.”

Cruxnow.com writes that Zini was a member of the “Movement of Priests for the Third World,” the Argentinean version of Liberation Theology between 1967 and 1976 which was turning religion into empty politics.

The group was less tied to Marxism than to leftwing Peronism, thus being an appendix of Argentina’s most important political party.
