After his first private audience with Francis since 2016, Cardinal Raymond Burke told Reuters.com: "Well, I'm still alive".
He declined to discuss the content of the meeting. He wore his usual full-length black coat, black hat and rosary beads in his left hand.
The Cardinal's statement was, perhaps unintentionally, a dig at Francis, who once used the same phrase as he left the Gemelli clinic.
Last month, Francis told Vatican officials at a regular meeting of the heads of the Roman dicasteries that he had decided to strip Burke of his home and income, a decision that caused worldwide outrage, even among Francis' supporters.
