The locals celebrate a 350-year-old Easter tradition called Scoppio del Carro, or "chariot explosion". A decorated chariot laden with fireworks is driven through the streets of the town by people in colourful 15th century costumes before stopping in front of the Duomo. The Archbishop of Florence then lights a wick during Easter mass, which leads outside to the chariot and sets off a huge firework display. The meaning behind the custom dates back to the First Crusade and is intended to ensure a good harvest.
