@Holy Cannoli: "Father" was introduced late in English for diocesan priests. I think Cardinal Manning started the fashion. Before diocesan priests were "Mister" in English. "Don" has always been a title for diocesan priests. But you are right it is also used in Southern Italy for the boss in a Mafia family.
What does the title Don mean? 
It's an Italian Honorific - somewhat similar to "sir", but with different connotations, usually referring to a male figure who is responsible for a group (it is used to refer to priests, for example, similar to "Father" in English, as in "Father Miller").
It's come to be used primarily to refer to the leaders of mafia families, to the extent that the word "Don" has entered the English language specifically referring to "the boss of a mafia family" (e.g. "Michael has become the Don of the Corleone family").
Had this happened before Second Vatican Council, such a miscarriage of justice would have produced Catholic riots in the whole of Australia. What has gone wrong with the Catholics since then?
Indirectly, you answered your own question, Don. Vatican Council II was part of a world-wide effort to erode and erase the "old" values both within The Church and society at large. Sorry to say for the most part it worked beyond the architects' wildest hopes. What we see here today is the result: an almost entirely secular, agnostic, Caucasian population with little to no interest in The Church outside of "weddin's an' funeruls".
Most mainstream Catholics today (and not just in Australia) are ignorant of history, ignorant of Church politics, ignorant of their own politics, ignorant of most anything except for various televised entertainment: sports, serialized dramas/comedies, etc.
@Ultraviolet: It seems that our bishops mainly aim at keeping the weddins' an' funerals' Christians happy while they are despising those who want to be true Christians. But this is a recipe for failure.
Cardinal Pell can use this false accusation against him as a form of mortification to atone for the sins of the church!!!! He can bypass purgatory if he place his cards right. Using bad situations and offering them up to God is very powerful for reparation and atonement of sins!!!!
