But there is hardly a second case in which one knows as well as in this case that statistics are deceptive: this Europe, Christian in name, has for some four hundred years become the birthplace of a new paganism which is growing inexorably in the heart of the Church itself and threatens to erode it from within.
The Church's manifestation in modern times is essentially determined by the fact that it has become, and is still and increasingly becoming, the Church of the pagans but in a completely new way; not, as it was once, the Church of the pagans who have become Christians, but the Church of pagans who still call themselves Christians but have in fact become pagans.
Today, paganism is within the Church itself, and this is precisely what characterises both, the Church of our day and the new paganism, that it is a paganism within the Church and a Church in whose harts paganism lives.

PS: Germany and France, the leading proponents of this pagan church were the decisive driving forces during Second Vatican Council.
