Paganism Is Within Today’s Church Itself. By Father Joseph Ratzinger

According to religious statistics, old Europe is still an almost entirely Christian continent.

But there is hardly a second case in which one knows as well as in this case that statistics are deceptive: this Europe, Christian in name, has for some four hundred years become the birthplace of a new paganism which is growing inexorably in the heart of the Church itself and threatens to erode it from within.

The Church's manifestation in modern times is essentially determined by the fact that it has become, and is still and increasingly becoming, the Church of the pagans but in a completely new way; not, as it was once, the Church of the pagans who have become Christians, but the Church of pagans who still call themselves Christians but have in fact become pagans.

Today, paganism is within the Church itself, and this is precisely what characterises both, the Church of our day and the new paganism, that it is a paganism within the Church and a Church in whose harts paganism lives.

PS: Germany and France, the leading proponents of this pagan church were the decisive driving forces during Second Vatican Council.

First Malvenda, who writes expressly on the subject, states as the opinion of Ribera, Gaspar Melus, Biegas, Suarrez, Bellarmine and Bosius that Rome shall apostatise from the faith, drive away the Vicar of Christ and return to its ancient paganism.” “Then the Church shall be scattered, driven into the wilderness, and shall be for a time, as it was in the beginning, invisible hidden in catacombs, in dens, in mountains, in lurking places; for a time it shall be swept, as it were from the face of the earth. Such is the universal testimony of the Fathers of the early Church." - Cardinal Henry Edward Manning, The Present Crisis of the Holy See, 1861, London: Burns and Lambert, p. 88-90, p. 79

Cardinal Alfredo Ottaviani, reader of the Third Secret of Fatima, made reference to one of its themes on the 15th of December 1960. In an allocution to the members of the Marian International Academy he declared, "It suffices to cast a rapid glance at what is happening at this moment in the world, in order to recognize that without the intervention of the Mother of all mercy near the All-Powerful, the world risks becoming pagan once more, a paganism more deplorable than the first paganism, because it is aggravated by apostasy. We are witnessing a veritable deluge of sins, a deluge which leaves behind it a nauseating quagmire, infected by immorality, lies and blasphemy..." - “Documentation Catholique,” 1961, col. 244, (15 December 1960 - Allocution de S. Em. Le cardinal Ottaviani à l'Académie Mariale Internationale)

He said that in 1958 and enthusiastically sided with the liberals at Vatican II ?

In hindsight, he would probably agree with you. However, there were not more than a couple hundred actual “conservative” bishops at Vatican II. The conservatives of the day were routed from the very beginning, with the swift rejection of Cardinal Ottaviani’s schema, when his microphone was famously tuned off to the raucous applause of many (classless) bishops. The Council effected a revolution, turning the liberals of the day, who still wanted to be Catholics, like Wojtyła and Ratzinger, into the new conservatives. The old heretics were then accepted as the liberal wing. We reap the “benefits” today.

Remember, even Archbishop Lefebvre signed the documents of Vatican II "in agreement" - there was an option to merely indicate 'present" if one didn't want to disagree.

John Cassini—I’ve heard that representation in the past, namely that there were only a few hundred of the bishops who were still “conservative” at the time of the Council. Yet, I’ve never been able to find any authoritive source for it. Can you help me out in that regard. I would greatly appreciate it.

@Irishpol - a good source for answering your question is "Iota Unum" by Romano Amerio.
