Withdrawing his signature from the Viganò Appeal would be “a cowardly alternative,” Cardinal Gerhard Müller told the German oligarch weekly Zeit (May 14).
Müller clarified that he usually doesn't sign appeals which, by their nature, cannot be precise in the details, however, he didn’t want to refuse Viganò’s request who has been “treated badly and is very isolated.”
For Müller, the appeal is thought-provoking: “If it can be refuted so easy, why do our clever anti-conspiracy theorists not just brush off the appeal from the table with three witty sentences, or let it disappear into a drawer?”
Cardinal Sarah initially joined the appeal, but withdrew his signature shortly afterwards.
