On the cover of this issue of Magnificat we meet again an artist who is already familiar to us, Jean Bourdichon (1457–1521). His exquisite miniature celebrating the discovery of Christ’s cross by Saint Helen (1) (248–330) was produced between 1503 and 1508, for The Great Book of Hours of Anne of Brittany, Queen of France.
Bourdichon always illustrates the lives of the saints in such a way as to exalt their charming closeness to everyone in the communion of saints. Here, his Saint Helen is a faithful portrait of the Queen of France, Anne of Brittany, commissioner of the Book of Hours. The oval of her beautiful face is circled by the tresses of her golden hair, resembling a mandorla. Her eyes discreetly invite us to turn our hearts to behold Him who loved us first. „Er muss wachsen, ich aber abnehmen“ – dieses Wort des Täufers Johannes nach dem Vierten Evangelium (Joh 3,30) steht auf Lateinisch im Hintergrund des Kreuzigungsbildes auf dem Isenheimer Altar, den Matthias Grünewald für ein Hospiz unheilbar Kranker geschaffen hat. Heute wird er in Colmar (Elsass) gezeigt.
Im Zentrum des Bildes steht der leidende Jesus Christus – das ohnmächtige Opfer der Gewalt, der aber gerade am Kreuz die Erlösung bringt. „Durch seine Wunden sind wir geheilt“ (Jes 53,5). Das ist den Kranken ein Trost und ein Grund der Hoffnung über den Tod hinaus.
Unter dem Kreuz des Isenheimer Altares stehen auf der einen Seite Maria, die Mutter Jesu, gehalten vom Lieblingsjünger, den die Tradition Johannes nennt, den Evangelisten.

Als Isenheimer Altar wird der Wandelaltar aus dem Antoniterkloster in Isenheim (französisch Issenheim) im Oberelsass (Département Haut-Rhin) bezeichnet, der im Musée Unterlinden in Colmar in drei Schauseiten getrennt ausgestellt ist. Die Gemälde auf zwei feststehenden und vier drehbaren Altar-Flügeln sind das in den Jahren 1512 bis 1516 geschaffene Hauptwerk von Matthias Grünewald und zugleich eines der bedeutendsten Meisterwerke der deutschen Tafelmalerei. Die Skulpturen im Altarschrein werden dem um 1490 in Straßburg tätigen Bildschnitzer Niklaus von Hagenau zugeschrieben.More

Born wealthy, he spent a worldly youth, and became involved in politics. Peregrine was initially strongly anti–Catholic. During a popular revolt, he struck the papal peace negotiator, Saint Philip Benizi, across the face. Saint Philip calmly turned the other cheek, prayed for the youth, and Peregine had a conversion.
He received a vision of Our Lady who told him to go to Siena, Italy, and there to join the Servites. After training and ordination, they assigned him to his home town. He lived and worked, as much as possible, in complete silence, in solitude, and without sitting down for 30 years in an attempt to do penance for his early life. When he did speak, he was known as a fervant preacher, excellent orator, and gentle confessor. Founded a Servite house at Forli, Italy.

After the introduction of the printing press to Europe in the mid-15th century, the production of manuscripts was changed, not ended. While printing enabled the rapid production of books of all kinds, discerning patrons continued to commission handwritten books, often requesting exquisitely illuminated prayer books for personal devotion or liturgical prayer. In the 1520s, the German Cardinal Albrecht von Brandenburg (1490–1545) commissioned an illuminated copy of a popular book of meditations on the life of Christ.

Su commissione di Papa Pio IX (1846–78), l’architetto romano Virginio Vespignani realizzò la Confessio (1861–64) collocata davanti all’Altare Papale. Vespignani utilizzò circa settanta tipi diversi di marmo, estratti per la maggior parte dai coevi scavi svolti a Roma e Ostia.
La Confessio rinvia all’importanza di Santa Maria Maggiore quale Betlemme dell’Occidente e Basilica natalizia di Roma. A partire dal pontificato di Teodoro (642–649), oriundo di Gerusalemme, essa fu anche denominata Sancta Maria “ad Praesepem”. Il titolo si riferisce alle cinque asticelle in legno di sicomoro (ficus sycomorus), parte della mangiatoia in cui è stato adagiato il bambinello Gesù. Datate da studi recenti scientificamente al periodo della sua nascita, sono conservati in un reliquiario in cristallo di rocca, progettato da Giuseppe Valadier (1802) in forma di culla.

Im Auftrag von Papst Pius IX. (1846-78) schuf der römische Architekt Virginio Vespignani die Confessio (1861-64) vor dem Papstaltar. Vespignani verwendete dafür etwa siebzig verschiedene Marmorsorten, die zumeist aus damaligen Ausgrabungen in Rom und Ostia stammten.
Die Confessio verweist auf die Bedeutung von Santa Maria Maggiore als „Bethlehem des Westens“ und „Weihnachtsbasilika“ von Rom. Seit dem Pontifikat Theodors I. (642-649), der aus Jerusalem stammte, wurde sie auch „Sancta Maria ad Praesepem“ genannt. Der Name bezieht sich auf die fünf Latten aus Ahornholz (ficus sycomorus), die Teil der Krippe waren, in die man das Jesuskind gelegt hatte. Die nach neuesten wissenschaftlichen Untersuchungen auf die Zeit der Geburt Jesu datierten Holzfragmente sind in einem Reliquiar aus Bergkristall aufbewahrt, das Giuseppe Valadier (1802) in Form einer Wiege entworfen hat.

En el año 432 el Papa Sixto III decidió hacer al interior de la primitiva Basílica de Santa María la Mayor una “gruta de la Natividad” similar a la de Belén. La iglesia tomó entonces el nombre de Santa Maria adpraesepem, que en latín significa “pesebre”.

Todo esto fue objeto de una devoción popular que motivó a muchos fieles, que regresaban de las peregrinaciones a Tierra Santa, a llevar como regalos los que eran considerados los fragmentos de madera del famoso pesebre del Niño Jesús, y que actualmente son conservados en un relicario con el nombre de la sagrada cuna (cunabulum).

He spent much of his time caring for his mother, who was in poor health. Jesuit noviate in 1616, deciding to become a Jesuit after reading the life of Saint Aloysius Gonzaga. Student at the Jesuit College at Malines, Belgium. Studied philosophy in Rome. John had a dream of helping and teaching multi-lingual migrants, and he studied all the chief languages of Europe. He wanted to work in China after ordination. He died of unknown causes following his participation in a public debate defending the faith, and while clutching his rosary, crucifix, and rules of his order; he did not live to be ordained.
