Lewis knew that the main battlefront in our age was to be matrimony, & the subtle-but-real war between the sexes. The opening line of That Hideous Strength is: “‘Matrimony was ordained, thirdly,’ said Jane Studdock to herself, ‘for the mutual society, help, and comfort that one ought to have of the other.’” The only stay against our confusion is the reclamation of genuine marriage, and there is no genuine marriage outside of the traditional register. “Male and female He created them.”
