Poznan Archbishop Stanisław Gądecki, the President of the Polish Bishops, has expressed his “deep concern” about the German Synod in a letter to presiding German bishop Bätzing (Episkopat.pl, February 22).
Gądecki asks the Germans to be faithful to the Church’s teaching and not to surrender to the “pressures of the world.”
Bätzing should avoid hackneyed slogans and standard demands such as the abolition of celibacy, female priesthood, Communion for adulterers, and "blessing" of homosex unions.
For Gądecki, it is a temptation to confront Christ’s teachings with “current developments in psychology and social sciences.” He compares current claims on homosexuality with "scientific" positions of racism and eugenics during the 20th century. Present deviations in the understanding of sexuality are for Gądecki "ideological delusions."
Despite "outrage, ostracism and unpopularity," the Church cannot "agree with a false image of man, let alone bless or promote it," Gądecki explains.
