Accused Priest Commits Suicide
Father Benjamin Sellier, 47, threw himself under a train in Avesnelles near Avesne-sur-Helpe, France, at around 3am on Monday morning.
He had just learned that he was being prosecuted for “sexual assault” of a young woman. Police found a letter in which he allegedly admitted to the facts, or rather put things in perspective.
Sellier had been under investigation for several months. He was the third of four children, the son of a Catholic doctor, a member of the church choir, and an altar boy. At 1.89m tall, he dreamed of becoming a notary or a policeman.
After graduating in law, he was Director General of services at Landrecies town hall (2003-2009). He entered the seminary at 33, was ordained in 2015, and arrived in Avesnes-sur-Helpe in 2020.
He was in charge of youth work and was the diocesan chaplain of the Eucharistic Youth Movement (MEJ).
In April 2021, a fire destroyed his church.
