There is “no significant moral difference” between medically assisted suicide [= the doctor helps a person to commit suicide] and voluntary euthanasia [= the doctor performs the homicide], “neither from the patient’s side nor from that of the physician.”
Both bear “the same moral responsibility” in carrying out a murder, Utrecht Cardinal Willem Eijk, a medical doctor and member of the Pontifical Academy for Life, told NcRegister.com (February 21).
Eijk rejects the ideas of Father Carlo Casalone and Marie-José Thiel, both members of the Academy, who support legalising assisted suicide with the argument that this would prevent a legalisation of euthanasia. This argument makes no sense for Eijk as allowing assisted suicide implies allowing euthanasia.
“One would simply and automatically pave the way for legalising euthanasia, because the ethical difference between both is not significant."

It seems the Pontifical Academy for Life has strayed so far from its original form that perhaps it would be better not to exist at all.
