The filing is intended to protect the archdiocese from more than 500 civil lawsuits seeking money for alleged homosexual abuse.
Cordileone wrote that the vast majority of the alleged abuses occurred in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s and involve priests who are deceased or no longer in ministry, adding that some lawsuits involve claims against unnamed priests, or priests unknown to the archdiocese.
In most cases, it is impossible to establish the truth because the cases date back forty years or more.
Since 2003, the archdiocese has sold assets to pay more than $70M to alleged abuse victims.
San Francisco joins ten US dioceses in active bankruptcy proceedings. 17 have already gone through the process.
Allegations of abuse are very attractive because they allow to make easily a lot of money without having to fear a serious investigation.
