Trump Visits John Paul II Nation Shrine – Washington Archbishop Slams Him

Washington Archbishop Wilton Gregory published a June 2 statement after it became known that there is a scheduled presidential visit to the Saint John Paul II National Shrine this morning (local time). Here is the statement from Archbishop Gregory:

“I find it baffling and reprehensible that any Catholic facility would allow itself to be so egregiously misused and manipulated in a fashion that violates our religious principles, which call us to defend the rights of all people even those with whom we might disagree. Saint Pope John Paul II was an ardent defender of the rights and dignity of human beings. His legacy bears vivid witness to that truth. He certainly would not condone the use of tear gas and other deterrents to silence, scatter or intimidate them [the rioters] for a photo opportunity in front of a place of worship and peace.”

So then, according to you, you ought to “defend the rights of all people even those with whom we might disagree” which would include the actions of President Donald Trump. If you do not defend the President’s rights then you are foolishly contradicting your own statement. What can we trust you to say that is not clearly inconsistent?

If you are unwilling to defend President Donald Trump because you disagree with his actions -- such as putting a stop to the rioting, arson, vandalism and wanton destruction of private property -- then what or who exactly are you willing to defend???

Pope St. John Paul II was a strong proponent of upholding the Moral Law - and he would be totally opposed to all this destruction of private property, which has happened under the guise of a "protest" over the death of Mr. Floyd. The use of tear gas has become necessary due to the destructive elements that have taken over the understandable cries of the protesters.
