Cardinal Walter Brandmüller doubts that "schism" is the correct term to describe the current downfall of the German Church.
For him this conflict is not about canonical questions, obedience or disobedience to the Pope and the Curia (Kath.net, 13 May).
Rather, the German Church is questioning fundamental tenants of the faith which are based on divine revelation. This is commonly referred to as “heresy,” he observes.
Although this has been the case for decades, Brandmüller suddenly finds that "even bishops" deny the indissolubility of marriage and demand women's ordination: "This means that the foundations of the Catholic faith and adherence to the Catholic Church have been abandoned."
However, Brandmüller immediately defuses his words by adding that the offence of heresy and its consequences are only fulfilled if the path taken should be continued.
After so many years, there is no indication that this will not be the case,

While I may personally dislike what they do and see such actions as grave errors, neither you nor I are lawfully empowered to decide when they have officially separated from The Church as schismatics.
