Cardinal Gerhard Müller condemns the "instrumentalisation of Mary for the demonstration of feminist ideologies", as in the case of the beheaded obscenity in the Cathedral of Linz in Austria, he writes on Kath.net (3 July).
He explains that art as a means of piety must correspond to the faith of the Incarnation, including "the truth that Mary was and remained a virgin before, during and after the birth of Jesus".
Art should strengthen faith but not lead to immorality. According to the Cardinal, the Linz obscenity is about the depiction of erotic and sexual fantasies.
It is an "advertisement for feminist ideology that violates the natural sense of shame".
Cardinal Müller adds that this "cannot be countered pseudo-enlightened with the accusation of prudery or as an outgrowth of an ultra-conservative attitude".
The sculptor Theresa Limberger has reacted with stubborness and announced that she will restore the obscenity exactly as it was before.

Cardinal Muller gives a very thoughtful and respectful analysis of the issues of a piece of 'art' such as this being presented in the Church.

Your words are not strong enough Cardinal Muller. That statue is an horrific & scandalous, blasphemy against Our Beloved Blessed Mother.... the sinless Mother of God!!! I have never seen anything like this in my 7 decades of life. The words 'wrath of God' keep coming to mind as I write this comment!!!

'Wrath of God' thoughts were in relation to the statue and all proactively involved with it....not in relation to Cardinal Muller.

About time a bishop condemned it…

@Philadelphia Trad Agree. Stop propagating photos of this blasphemous statue which arouse anger, shock, and even unwanted thoughts in those who see them. It is sinful to distribute these photographs and to thereby be the cause of the occasion of such sins.

Het feminisme is de grootste vijand van het ware Katholiek geloof.

I disagree. St. Mary is the true feminist model. All other feminists are far inferior. This statue was made by a Wiccan…That’s not St. Mary. That’s a cheap counterfeit.

@Naomi Arai good point. Jesus, in the Gospels, always allows his mother and other women to speak their minds, He treats them as spiritually equal to men and never disrespects, dismisses, or considers them second class citizens. Christ is also a man's model on how women should be treated. The statue is disrespectful and degrading to the Blessed Mother and it objectifies women in general, something …More
