On Thursday evening, a man with serious psychiatric problems, aged about 40, drove with his car past two checkpoints and entered the Vatican at high speed .
The gendarmerie inspector standing guard at the gate, fired a shot at the front tyres of the car, but it drove on. The gendarmes raised the alarm and blocked access to the back of St. Peter's.
The madman managed to reach the Damasus courtyard of the Apostolic Palace and was arrested there.
