All Smiles: Francis Longest Meeting With An US President
Only Vatican journalists were allowed at the meeting. Given Biden’s penchant for off mike gaffes, the suppressed live coverage was likely an attempt to protect him.
Unsurprisingly, Francis discussed with Biden the main tenants of his secular faith: ecologism, covid, mass immigration.
Biden gave Francis a handwoven 1930 chasuble from Holy Trinity Church in DC, where he attends Mass. Francis wan't have any use for the beautiful garment. He further presented Francis with a command coin, telling him with an American hyperbolism that it is given "to warriors and leaders, and you are the most significant warrior for peace I've ever met." Francis took it in his hands and, after walking Biden to the door, repeated, "thank you for this."
Biden called the badge “Peace Dollar” saying that next time they meet, Francis will be buying the drinks, adding, "I'm the only Irishman you've met that has never had a drink." Francis replied "Don't they drink a lot of whisky?"
Francis gave Biden a painting on a ceramic tile, the 2021 Message of Peace, the Document on "Human Fraternity," and a book chronicling Francis’ 2020 Urbi et Orbi one-man show during the alleged pandemic.
Also on October 29, Francis received South Korean President Moon Jae-in and gave him a copy of all his encyclicals. Moon gave Francis a cross made with the barbed wire of the border fence that separates North and South Korea.
