The Mass in the Roman rite was celebrated at the parish church of St. Bartholomew the Apostle in Ciągowice. Born: May 15, 1850 Died: Oct 2, 1912 Beatified : Dec 21, 1992 Jan Beyzym, known in Madagascar as the Servant of Lepers, was a true pioneer in caring for lepers during the time when leprosy was incurable and those afflicted with leprosy were banished from society. He was born in the family estate in Poland’s Volinia region and was the eldest of five children. He received his early education at home but when the family lost its estates in the 1863 uprising and were forced to separate, Jan’s mother took the children to live with her sister in the Podole region while Jan’s father crossed into Austrian held Galicia in order to flee from the Cossacks who were pursuing him. Jan decided to become a diocesan priest after completing his secondary studies but while visiting his father whom he had not seen for eight years, his father suggested that he consider the Jesuits instead. Miracle of Ocotlan, Mexico: Appearance of Christ Crucified (Our Lord of Mercy) - October 3 On Saturday, October 2, 1847, an earthquake devastated the town of Ocotlan, Tlaxcala, Mexico. The earthquake killed 40 people and left the small town in ruins. Mass was to be held in the cemetery the following day, October 3, presided over the Parochial Vicar, Father Julián Navarro. Just before the start of Mass, two white clouds joined together in the northwest sky, and an image of Christ crucified appeared. More than 2,000 people who had gathered for Mass saw a perfect image of Jesus Christ crucified that appeared in the sky for more than 30 minutes. Those present and in nearby towns were deeply moved, made acts of contrition, and cried out begging, “Lord, have mercy!” This apparition of Christ was called “the Lord of Mercy” and in his honor, in September 1875, a new parish church was blessed, consecrated and dedicated to Him.
