The nativity scene unveiled in the Vatican on 9 December is surprisingly beautiful.
It pays tribute to the first nativity scene installed by St Francis of Assisi in Greccio in 1223.
However, it contains a historical blunder. In the background, a Franciscan celebrates Holy Mass with the back to God. Removing God from the centre of the liturgy by introducing a people's altar was a novelty introduced only in the late sixties.
Previous Vatican nativity scenes have featured controversial figures, including half-naked men.

Bishop Joseph Strickland has not been banned from celebrating Eucharists in his former Diocese of Tyler, Texas. Strickland wrote to CatholicVote.org (9 December): "Tell them I received no such directive."
The original news story was published by LifeSiteNews.com (December 7) under the headline: "Bishop Strickland banned from celebrating Mass in Tyler."
Strickland is on retreat at a Benedictine abbey in Oklahoma until December 16. There are only two such abbeys in this US state. It is likely that he is not at St. Gregory's Abbey in Shawnee, but at Clear Creek Abbey where the Roman Rite is celebrated.

Archbishop Viganò, 82, announced plans for a new seminary called Collegium Traditionis under his supervision in Torrita di Siena, Italy.
Originally, Viganò purchased the building for the Benedictine nuns of Pienza who were expelled from their monastery. But they later decided not to go ahead with Viganò.
The house will now be adapted as a seminary and retreat center.
Viganò comes from a wealthy family. There are persistent rumours that he will consecrate or has already consecrated one or more bishops, and that he is in contact with groups willing to jump on his boat.

On the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, Bishop Schneider announced a worldwide crusade to pray for a divine intervention in this enormous crisis of the Church.

“Why is there no Traditional Latin Mass at the Catholic University of America?”, a student asked Washington Cardinal Wilton Gregory at a December 7 conversation entitled "Celebrating Diversity".
Cardinal Gregory replied that Paul VI "allowed" the celebration of Mass only for older priests and wanted everyone after that generation in the Novus Ordo, "Tradition dies a slow death, sometimes a bloody death".

Mass immigration is not about helping people but about destroying a nation's identity, Cardinal Müller told LifeSiteNews.com (December 4).

For the first time in history, three cardinals will celebrate the Vigil of the Immaculate Conception in three different churches in Madrid. Such vigils have been held in Madrid since the 15th century.
- Cardinal Cobo, 58, will celebrate in the Cathedral of Almudena.
- Cardinal Osoro (78; retired in June 2023) at the Shrine of María Auxiliadora.
- Cardinal Rouco (87; retired in 2014) at the Basílica Hispanoamericana de la Merced.

He psychologised that these are "temptations disguised as fidelity to tradition, but often, rather than responses to the Spirit, they are responses to personal dissatisfaction."
Instead of ranting and generalising, Francis should have shown where and how a method of evangelisation which that avoids these alleged errors bears concrete fruit. Francis empty liturgies and empty general audiences cannot serve as an example.
