May 25th, 2018 will remain a day that will stain the memory of Ireland’s previous and glorious civilizational achievements. The passage by referendum of a vote that would remove any protections to the life of the child in the womb is likely unprecedented in human history. Not now, but soon, that vote will haunt many who will come to understand clearly what they have done.
It is also the case that the true Ireland remains in the over 700,000 voters who sought to defend the common understanding of justice that built this nation. In them, as in other tragic moments of history, the best of Ireland was still visible. Their perseverance, constancy, and sacrifice on behalf of future generations, as of yet unknown to them, will also be remembered.

We respect the Supreme Court as the highest institution in the State, a forum in which “justice shall be administered” to all, without fear or favour. The Court has the duty, in final appeal, “to respect, and, as far as practicable, by its laws to defend and vindicate” the fundamental rights of those in its charge, especially the most vulnerable. I regret to say that it has failed lamentably in the discharge of this weighty responsibility, in its recent decision on immigration and unborn rights (known as the M case).
The basic right to life
It is an undeniable medical fact that an unborn child is capable of independently enjoying the most primitive form of the natural right to life, that is, the right not to have her tiny human life wilfully taken away or ended by another. In this respect it is a fundamental right, inalienable and imprescriptible, neither given by, nor taken away by, the Supreme Court. Yet that is precisely what they have done in respect of …More

A situation of unprecedented gravity is being revealed before our eyes.
The Minister for Justice, Charles Flanagan, TD, is due to move an appeal, listed in the Supreme Court for February 21, seeking to overturn the High Court judgement of Humphreys J. in I.R.M. v. Minister for Justice and Equality, [2016] IEHC 478.
In that judgement, the High Court affirmed that the rights of unborn children are not limited to the right to life under Article 40.3.3, inserted by the Eighth Amendment. Humphreys J. specifically referred to the submissions made to the court by the State and considered by Irvine J. in O.E. v. The Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform [2008] 3 I.R 760.
In that judgement, it is asserted, from the comprehensive and compelling analysis of the pre-existing law, that the other rights, or potential rights, enjoyed by the unborn child, included significant rights under the Constitution, and that the existence of such rights had been established in case law,…More

This is a wonderful example of parents persevering with courage and hope against the counsel of a respected doctor's diagnosis and strongly advising abortion.
May 3, 2017 (LifeSiteNews) — Their doctor told them in no uncertain terms, “You should have an abortion.” Stella and Matt, prayerful Orthodox Christians, were stunned. Just a couple weeks before, at around five months pregnant, the doctor had assured them that everything was fine. An earlier finding that their son might have Down syndrome had been retracted. The joyful parents who already had one child at home were thrilled and looked forward to their son’s birth. Now this.
The diagnosis was Androgen insensitivity. The prospective parents had never heard the term before. They soon discovered that it is a condition that affects sexual development before birth and during puberty. Their child would technically be a male, with one X chromosome and one Y chromosome in each cell. But because the child in Stella’s womb was unable to …More

Chris Anaya and his cousin were looking for a good place to fish on the Arkansas River near the Keeper of the Plains on Saturday afternoon when he spotted something odd.
About half of a life vest was floating in the water, with something unusual dangling from it: part of a rosary.
“It just stood out like a sore thumb to me,” Anaya said in a Facebook interview Monday about his find.
He immediately thought of Brian Bergkamp, the seminarian who went missing while kayaking on the rain-swollen Arkansas River on July 9 and was presumed drowned.
Wichita police on Monday confirmed that a body found in the river near Herman Hill Park last week was Bergkamp’s. His family was notified Friday after the coroner was able to confirm his identity, Sgt. Nikki Woodrow said.
The Catholic Diocese of Wichita said in a statement Monday that it “wishes to express gratitude to God for His abundant graces offered to strengthen all impacted by Brian’s death, to the members of the recovery team and personnel of …More

“ Men cannot improve society by setting fire to it; they must seek out its old virtues, and bring them back into the light.”
Russell Kirk

Donald Trump’s campaign has become a source of intense preoccupation, for those who support, as well as for those who oppose, his candidacy for the White House. The uneasiness has ranged from the judgment that he is a racist and xenophobe to the serious possibility that he is mentally unstable and therefore not a rational actor. Many worry that he is woefully ignorant of policy and foreign affairs. Some conservatives reluctantly supporting Trump cannot shake off the feeling that they are being played by the ever-changing rhetoric of Mr. Trump.
Others have drawn parallels with the rise of Hitler to power in Germany. But the questions of how precisely Trump might severely damage democracy or cross the line into that which one could justly characterize as the rule of a dictator, remain murky.
The problem with any …More

Two weeks ago I asked Fr. Guarnizo the following question which, at that time, he did not answer:
As you know, It is the president who will make nominations to the Supreme Court and those nominations must only then be confirmed by the Senate. Therefore, it is the president who obviously is the most crucial person in the process of populating the court with whomever he/she believes most closely corresponds to their own political objectives. I don't intend to follow up or to argue about other points but simply would like you to go on the record with your answer. God bless.

PARIS — A Bastille Day fireworks celebration was shattered by death and mayhem Thursday night in France’s southern city of Nice when a large truck barreled through an enormous crowd of spectators, crushing and maiming dozens — eight months after the Paris attacks that traumatized the nation and all of Europe.
Officials and witnesses in Nice said at least 77 people were killed by the driver of the rampaging truck, who was shot to death by the police as officers scrambled to respond on what is France’s most important annual holiday. Graphic television and video images showed the truck accelerating and tearing through the crowd, and the bullet-riddled windshield of the vehicle, which the mayor described as full of weapons and grenades.
Officials did not immediately classify the Nice killings as terrorism, but members of the Paris Prosecutor’s antiterrorism office quickly took over the investigation of what happened, and they warned residents to stay indoors.

America is currently witnessing the unseemly race of prolife and evangelical leaders into the Trump camp. Their previously unflinching opposition to his candidacy has gone up in smoke. Why?
First in line come the financial considerations of the Trump-supporting crowd. Over at Liberty University, Jerry Falwell, Jr., I am told, is receiving hundreds of millions of dollars of federal money. He clearly must be concerned that all this taxpayer funding could well disappear if Hillary Clinton occupies the Oval Office.
This problem is not unique to Falwell: Dozens of Christian and Catholic universities have been willing to give up their economic freedom and become dependent on the State in order to expand. As I have argued for many years, the loss of economic freedom inevitably leads to the loss of moral freedom.
In May, Marjorie Dannenfelser, President of the Susan B. Anthony List, put her byline on a national column titled: “…More

@SAA5of5 : Obviously I am not speaking about the Catholic Church as such but, as you rightly say, "a (clear) majority of her current members (especially popes, cardinals, bishops and priests)". I would believe that among the bishops of Western Europe (the Pope included), there are not five who have unequivocally positioned themselves as pro-life. I know it is horrible what I am writing now: Do we expect from a candidate for the U.S. presidency to be more Catholic than the Pope? That seems to be very unrealistic.

@Abramo, to say, "nor any Republican or Democrat," I understand if you are pointing out the failure of previous so-called life-supporting presidents. But to suggest it into infinity is saying abandon ship and run ... where? I think we had good candidates and the American people opted for...well, for a good laugh and some hope that all of Trump's (questionable), "winning" would end up in their wallets.
I agree the candidates can't rely on a, "Catholic vote" as they did at one time. The people in the pews are very divided on major issues that would be considered either, "liberal" or "conservative."
Since you brought up the Catholic Church and her bishops, I am going to guess that the division in the Church is not 50/50 but rather "many" vs. "few," and pretty much the same distinction Cardinal Wuerl recently pointed to when discussing those unhappy with Pope Francis. If the Catholic Church is defined this way, I'm not Catholic. But you're "egging me on" 🤫 because I don't think you believe …More

With each passing news day, the scandal deepens around Hillary Clinton’s unauthorized removal of U.S. secrets during her tenure as Secretary of State.
The process of this unauthorized extraction of U.S. secrets by Mrs. Clinton makes one thing abundantly clear. This conspiracy was anything but convenient to Mrs. Clinton. Contrary to what she disingenuously claimed, convenience was most definitely not the reason for her actions. To remove Top Secret information and hundreds of other classified documents from the government’s care, she had to risk jail and even get others to collude in this process.
For nearly eight months, I observe that the most important question is still not being asked of Hillary Clinton and her partisans. Why was Clinton doing this?
As anyone knows, it is impossible for Hillary Clinton to end up with a colossal stash of U.S. national secrets on her personal server by accident. She could not simply email herself most …More

Photos circulating on the internet of a dying Carmelite sister are certainly, as they say, worth a thousand words. But the images that have traveled around the world are only part of the story. For those who lived her suffering beside her, the nun’s testimony of joy and peace were just as radiant as her face.
News of her failing health and her reflections spread quickly through social media or WhatsApp. Even Pope Francis was following her situation. And Sister Cecilia Maria, a discalced Carmelite, knew about everyone’s prayer.
Despite her illness, she did not lose her joy, which was sustained by the support of her numerous family members, who remained close by. Joyful nieces and nephews congregated in the gardens outside the hospital where she was admitted for some weeks, sending her messages and helium balloons to distract and entertain her from the window.
Her joy was accompanied — or perhaps explained — by...

NEW YORK, June 24 (C-Fam) The Polish government snapped back at European bureaucrats in a scathing response to a report published last week by the Council of Europe that criticized Poland’s restrictive abortion law and its treatment of women.
Donning the ceremonial tone and submissive deference that many countries adopt in their interface with international bureaucrats, Poland accused the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, Latvian-American Nils Muižnieks, of “overstepping his mandate,” of bias and selectivity, and interfering in internal affairs in an official response to a report of the Commissioner published last week.
In a section on “sexual and reproductive health” the Commissioner’s report instructs Poland to decriminalize abortion, remove conscience protections for doctors and medical personnel, and enact mandatory comprehensive sexuality education.
Instead of bowing obsequiously as is commonly assumed nations will do in …More

Article: Fr. Marcel Guarnizo-Columnist, Townhall
The current political situation in Croatia is a glaring example of how ambitious politicians can threaten the good of a nation. In January of this year, Croatia installed a most unusual Prime Minister Tihomir Oreškovic, a young reformer (50 years old), an outsider, a CEO and the first independent prime minister in Croatian modern history. Oreškovic who was working in Canada is not a creature of the two establishment parties in Croatia and is also therefore an independent reformer and clearly not owned by the political establishment.
Upon arrival, the Prime Minister promptly engaged in serious economic reform and the GDP growth in Croatia in his first quarter exceeded expectations. The Prime Minister also happens to enjoy wide support in Croatia but as you would expect the ruling political class in Croatia, marred for decades in corruption and on occasion criminality, is now seeking to bring down the government …More
