It's a fallacy of composition to say a man is guilty of something because his colleagues do it. Likewise, it's just as fallacious to say a man is good because his friends are good.

You could apply that reasoning (incorrect as it is) to Pope Francis' close friendship with Benedict. By your reasoning, having such good friends should count in his favour, yes? Or do that friendship simply get ignored because it contradicts the narrative?
