Cardinal Becciu said during his Vatican trial on May 5 that Francis agreed to pay up to €1 M to the Inkerman Group, a British intelligence firm, for freeing Sr Gloria Cecilia Narvaez, who was held captive for nearly five years by Moslems in Mali.
However, Francis forbad Becciu from telling anyone else about it, including the Vatican’s police chief. Because the Vatican wanted to remain external to any operation, so Cecilia Marogna was hired as an intermediary.
Francis’ willingness to pay ransom could pose serious security implications for missionaries around the world.
