During the funeral of the late Cardinal Joachim Meisner on July 15 in Cologne, Germany, an address of the former Pope Benedict XVI was read. Meisner was one of the four Dubia cardinals. The day before his death he spoke with Benedict on the phone.
Benedict remembers that it was not easy for Meisner to retire as an archbishop "especially in a time, when the Church needs in an especially urgent way shepherds who resist the dictatorship of the zeitgeist, and live and think very decidedly out of the Faith."
According to Benedict, in the last period of his life Meisner was able to find a profound certainty "that the Lord does not leave his Church, even though the boat is sometimes filled with water, almost to the point of capsizing."

Steve it is not a matter of being good or bad. God provided men with intellect and free will to establish truth. There are some reflections on attacks and opposition to BXVI by lay authors and few canonical reflections on validity of his abdication. God bless you too.

Rafal,
I guess we will just have to disagree. May God bless you for being a good Catholic.

mccallansteve your idea stems from disintegrated facts. To comprehend main reason of "abdication" one should integrally include all facts in the process of building final conclusion. Surely distinguishing between being of God and pope is a must. The same people who wanted Francis worked on BXVI removal...

With all respect, Rafal, Christ gave His life as an example, especially to all of His future vicars. For the first 300 years plus, all the popes gave their lives for the faith. The abdication of Benedict was an cowardly act. If he had done what he was supposed to do, Francis would not be afflicting the Church today.

mccallansteve Pope Benedict XVI is not a tyrant who in contrary to his adversaries eliminates his foes to keep governance by all illicit means. His own flock was disobedient, unsupportive and conspirative. Now he remains in contemplative Petrine Ministry untill Princes finally realize the unjustice done. Catholics should avoid cynical ["...should have happily given his life..."] mentality: " /If …More

Catholics should avoid cynical ["...should have happily given his life..."] mentality: " /If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross!” Likewise, the chief priests, scribes, and elders mocked Him, saying, “He saved others, but He cannot save Himself. He is the King of Israel! Let Him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in Him./

No power on earth can force a pope to abdicate. If needs be, Benedict should have happily given his life for the Church, but he did not.

mccallansteve Pope Benedict XVI was forced into "abdication" by wolves in sheep's clothing and by wolves in shepherd's clothing... ["...and then abandoned ship!"]

Benedict says the Church is a capsizing boat; He should know because he was the captain of that boat for 8 years and then abandoned ship!
