From what I understand, it is that the operation repaired a hernia that resulted from a previous operation that did not close correctly. I had that same type of operation at 59 years of age. It is not an easy operation. Laparotomy, is open abdominal surgery, not to be confused with Laparoscopic hernia repair which is the repair of a hiatal hernia using a laparoscope. In the laparotomy, they cut through the abdomen muscle to get at inner organs. In the case of hernia repair, they put in a nylon mesh so that the muscle wound closes well. It is not easy to recover from. I was required to have 30 days of bed rest. I had drainage tubes for several weeks. . Jorge is almost 25 years older.

Post-op recover is VERY PAINFUL according to the site I read, and my uncle who is a MD in L.A. texts me when I have questions, and said the older a person is, the worse the pain/discomfort post-op recovery. Also if a man is obese and never exercises, is worse. Aside from the hernia, my uncle also said that Bergoglio has degerative digestive/colon issues (possible diverticulitis, or even colon cancer), and that the fever he experienced for 1 day last week is suspect for all of these mentioned issues.....not just from "fatigue" as the VAtican said. Lastly, he said the older the person is, the more likely for complications, and the more likely for a swift decline in overall health because having a 3-4+ hr. operation is a severe strain on the heart/respiratory/renal functions for an older person.....especially at Bergoglio's old age and frail health anyway.

He has a hernia and they're going to repair it with very small incision surgery. Not a big deal.

@spinmeister -That's not what I just read! I read that Pope Francis was in great pain, leading to this decision to operate. The Dr. said that the reason he was in increasing pain was because he had a recurrence of abdominal bulging as well as the hernia, and that it is possible that his intestines had become trapped (knotted). He said it might be necessary to also remove more of the Pope's colon/intestines. If he recovers in the hospital, which is problematic considering his age, recover time in the Vatican would be between 3-6 months. There goes his trip to Mongolia!

. I don't which anyone dead, but I think the Cardinals should seriously consider electing a solid and orthodox Catholic in the next conclave.

I think this time, it must be pretty bad for Bergoglio, because I just checked fromrome.info of Br. Alexis, who is always usually up to the minute on the Pope. No reports on either Bergoglio's visit to the hospital on Monday, nor his re-admittance and emergency surgery today. Usually he knows everything there is to know. And I thik he does......but the news so not good for Bergoglio at all......…More

@Clement Jaeho Chung Of course the doctor will say that. The Pope is in perfect healt till 3 days after he's dead. Pope Francis has lied in the past and ordered the Vatican to do the same has he not?
Medical examinations are also a lot better now than 120 years ago, and the rumours regarding Francis predate the recent health scare.More

He went into the hospital for tests yesterday, and it was shown that surgery had to be performed. The fact that he's back in the hospital so fast is a bad sign, that it's maybe something serious.

He went into the hospital for tests yesterday, and it was shown that surgery had to be performed. The fact that he's back in the hospital so fast is a bad sign, that it's maybe something serious.
Personally, for some reason, I do not think it will go well. He might survive, but suffer a rapid overall decline. People that age usually do. My great-aunt was fine up until she was 88. She tripped and fell over her cat, and fell down the stairs and broke her hip (this was 4 years ago). She had to get a hip replacement, had complications, and recovered for a few months only to get the flu which became pneumonia, and she passed away. That's what happens with old people.

He may survive, but his health will go way down after this, and I would not be surprised if he passes before his beloved "Synod on Synodality" is supposed to convene, throwing that whole process, and the Church in general, into caos.
