Mel Gibson supported a September 10 Chicago rosary rally of the “Coalition for Cancelled Priests” including "suspended" Father James Altman.
The bishops who persecute their priests tolerate any kind of nonsense, Gibson denounced, "but if one of their priests utters something that resembles orthodoxy then they spring into action" and "drum him out of the service.”
Gibson calls this "white martyrdom" and a sign of "a very deep sickness of the Church." He agrees with Archbishop Viganò's truism that the misery started with the failed Vatican II.
When Gibson wanted support for his 2004 Passion of Christ he approached the US Bishops, “Those men couldn't get away from me fast enough and all but a few of them turned their back on me.” This way, they revealed who they were: "a pretty insipid bunch - and it doesn't look like anything changed.”

WE must remember that the USCCB movie reviewers initially gave the Passion of the Christ the worst rating possible "O" - offensive to all! It was changed to a better rating only after a public outcry/backlash. Also the same reviewers gave the gay -themed Brokeback Mountain a good rating!

Indeed he was: it was a very specific group of Jewish leaders in one city who've been dead for 2000 years. Worth noting Mel was pretty clear those men didn't represent ALL Jews even at that time since he depicted St. Simon of Cyrene as a Jew.

Gibson isn’t perfect, but he made what is, by far, the most Catholic, high production value movie about the life of Christ that has ever been made. He used Bl. Anne Catherine Emmerich and John’s Gospel for his guides. Going to the bishops’ conference was a very good idea, in order to promote the movie to Catholics. I think the movie was much more popular among evangelicals, since it wasn’t promoted …More

I think the movie was much more popular among evangelicals, since it wasn’t promoted at parishes. I think it’s unfair to blame Gibson for this.

No offense intended here, @John A Cassani but that first sentence just ain't true. Franco Zeffirelli's "Jesus Of Nazareth" beats The Passion on jus about every point, except clinical accuracy for The Crucifixion.
For starters, Zeffirelli covered the entirety of Jesus' life, from the Annunciation right through The Passion. It was longer, (shown in the US as a TV mini-series) had a bigger budget …More

If I remember correctly, Zeffirelli's film portrays Mary being in pain during childbirth. That at least undermines the concept of virginitas in partu--virgin during birth.
