Taken literally, the words suggest the heresy of impanation: the divine Word united to bread that remains bread, somewhat analogously to the Incarnation. Catholic doctrine is transubstantiation. After consecration, the substance of bread no longer remains. It is not God who becomes bread, but bread that becomes Christ’s Body. The favorable interpretation is that Leo XIV is using devotional or metaphorical language. Benedict XVI used similar language.
