Canada's Senators reject making residential school denialism a hate crime

There was an amendment before Canada's Senate to make residential school denialism a crime. The legislation is Bill C-9, An Act to amend the Criminal Code (hate propaganda, hate crime and access to religious or cultural places).
One of our readers said the change is "childish. This is his message to Canada's senators:
Bill C-9 reminds me of the mean games and petulant accusations that children in school yard playgrounds use to manipulate each other: "I'm changing the rules!"
"You can't say that! You hate me!"
Bill C-9 seems to want to regulate people's thoughts, their speech, and their emotions, not their physical actions. But who will determine what constitutes "detestation" or "vilification"? A person who doesn't like what you or I believe or say? Who will determine how to interpret words that are subjective and sometimes self-serving?
With this in mind, I urge you to defeat Bill C-9 when voting time comes in the Senate.
