China is untouchable: the Vatican's conspiracy of silence on Jimmy Lai

CHURCH
News of the conviction of Hong Kong Catholic publisher Jimmy Lai has been completely ignored by Vatican media outlets and the Holy See. This is yet another perverse consequence of the secret China-Vatican agreement: in the name of political expediency, Catholics are being left at the mercy of their persecutors.
- Jimmy Lai's conviction was the result of a sham trial, by Riccardo Cascioli
- DOSSIER: Jimmy Lai, a Catholic against the Power
Yesterday, condemnations of the Chinese and Hong Kong authorities continued throughout the day for their conviction of Jimmy Lai, an entrepreneur and publisher who has become a symbol of Hong Kong's struggle for freedom and democracy, on charges of conspiracy and sedition. In a statement, the European External Action Service also spoke of a 'political trial' and the 'erosion of democracy and fundamental freedoms in Hong Kong since the National Security Law came into force in 2020', calling for 'the immediate and unconditional release of Jimmy …

On December 14, a solemn Mass according to the ancient Ambrosian Rite was celebrated in the historic Basilica of Sant’Ambrogio in Milan. This extraordinary liturgy followed the 1954 Ambrosian Missal. The Mass was celebrated by Monsignor Francesco Braschi, a long-time celebrant of the Ambrosian Rite, with the approval of the Archdiocese of Milan and the abbot of the basilica.

Cardinal Müller and Archbishop Gänswein have urged that Leo XIV return to Benedict XVI’s liturgical rules regarding the traditional Mass.
The restrictions on the traditional liturgy which Leo has inherited from Pope Francis are among the issues many Catholics deem most pressing for the Pope to address. A number of prelates have condemned Francis’ arbitrary restrictions since 2021, and
evidence has suggested that the public defence given for the measures themselves is in fact baseless.
Gerhard Cardinal Müller and Archbishop Georg Gänswein now join the many voices urging a lifting of such restrictions, with Müller doing so via an interview with Pelican+ and Gänswein in conversation with a German Catholic outlet.
Müller was appointed by Benedict XVI as prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in 2012. To this day he remains …

Archbishop Georg Gänswein on Pope Francis, His Reassignment, and Benedict XVI

In an unusually candid interview with IlTempo.it on December 15, Archbishop Georg Gänswein spoke about his relationship with Pope Francis, his reassignment after the death of Benedict XVI, and his role in publishing unpublished sermons of Benedict XVI. Main quotes.
Return to Freiburg After Benedict XVI’s Death
“As soon as Benedict XVI's funeral was over, Pope Francis decided that I should immediately return to my home diocese of Freiburg. However, in a move that was highly unusual for the secretary of a deceased pontiff, I was not assigned any duties.”
“Even some people who were not exactly friends confided to me that this treatment of me had indeed been excessively harsh.”
The Request for an Audience With Pope Francis
“A year later, on 31st December 2023, on the first anniversary of Benedict XVI's death, I came to Rome to celebrate Mass at the altar of St Peter's Chair and another near his tomb in the Vatican Grottoes.”
“It was one of the Memores Domini who advised me to request an …More

Nothing on Amazon Synod and forcing Pope Benedict to retract his signature from the book he co-authored with card Sarah - which happened to save the celibacy? Does jailer Gänswein think we forget the dirty job he did for his boss - the false prophet Bergoglio? Gotta love these crocodile tears over Bergoglio's feint attack on his most loyal servant, Gänswein

I watched that speech when he first made it. Than watched it one or two more times. It was a long speech. I remember in part of his speech he was talking about how one country I won't mention, and how they said that GOD was a woman. Then added But so far they are only thinking about. Then said right after that, GOD Forgive them, for they no not what they do. I cracked up over that. This speech was back in 2022 or 23. I believe.

Existentialism: Fyodor Dostoevsky "The Grand Inquisitor" (Brothers Karamazov)

Existentialism: Fyodor Dostoevsky "The Grand Inquisitor" (Brothers Karamazov)
Gregory B. Sadler on May 15, 2012 In this lecture, I explore some of the key themes, the character, and the narrative of Fyodor Dostoevsky's "Grand Inquisitor" chapter of The Brothers Karamazov. I focus in particular on different understandings of human happiness, the temptations the Devil gave to Christ in the desert, and the range of human goods, showing how the Inquisitor, and perhaps also Ivan, misunderstood Love and Freedom
The Grand Inquisitor
is a parable in Fyodor Dostoyevsky's novel The Brothers Karamazov (1879–1880). It is told by Ivan, who questions the possibility of a personal and benevolent God, to his brother Alyosha, a novice monk. The Grand Inquisitor is an important part of the novel and one of the best-known passages in modern literature because of its ideas about human nature and freedom, and its fundamental ambiguity.

We Should Have All Things through Mary
In a short excerpt from his Encyclical Ingravescentibus malis Pope Pius XI confirms the previous Papal Magisterium on the Most Holy Virgin Mary, which we have alrady quoted
here, here, here, here and here.
Repeating the teaching of St. Bernard of Clairvaux, the Pope reiterates that God wishes that we should receive all things from Him through Mary.
Pope Pius XI
"He [God] who made the peoples and nations for health (Wis1:14) without a doubt will not let perish those whom He has redeemed with His Precious Blood, nor will He ever abandon His Church. But, rather … we must beseech God through the mediation of the Blessed Virgin, so dear to Him, since, to use the words of St. Bernard, 'Such is the will of God, who has wished that we should have all things through Mary.'" (Encyclical Ingravescentibus malis, § 8, p. 417)

LAWFARE: Big Fani might have a heft legal bill coming due as President Trump and his fellow 18 defendants are able to recover their legal fees from her Fulton County office. Georgia’s November 26 dismissal triggered a 2025 state statute allowing Donald Trump to reclaim $5–10 million in fees from Fani Willis’s office after she was disqualified for an improper relationship with a special prosecutor. The Georgia Supreme Court removed her permanently in September, opening the door for all 19 defendants to file similar reimbursement claims. The total cost could dwarf Trump’s alone and stands as a humiliating rebuke of Willis’s partisan prosecution. The blowback is now financial as well as legal.
