How Europe is Building a Carbon Currency

EU to extend carbon border levy to car parts, refrigerators, and washing machines.
That was today’s Reuters headline
1. It may sound like boring bureaucratic noise, but it really isn’t. It is the final piece of a puzzle that has been coming together for three years. We usually hear about these things separately: a new ‘Digital Euro’, a new ‘Digital ID’, or a new ‘Carbon Tax’.
But when you look at the timeline, you realise they aren’t separate. They are gears in a single machine.

Right now, if you have the money to buy something, you can buy it. Your bank checks your financial balance, and that’s it. But by 2029, that changes2. The infrastructure is being built to check a second balance: your carbon balance.
Today’s news confirms that the system is expanding from taxing raw steel to taxing the things you actually buy — fridges, cars, and washing …

Among the various legal troubles inherited with the previous pontificate, Pope Leo XIV now faces a lawsuit at the European Court of Human Rights because the Vatican allegedly did not respect a fundamental right of a retiree: the inalienability of the pension accrued by the worker. The lawsuit was filed by two former managers of the IOR, Paolo Cipriani and Massimo Tulli, both convicted by the Vatican court for mismanagement. The Vatican bank, which should have paid them the pension allowance, albeit reduced by a third due to the conviction, as happens in all national systems, for example, even in Italy, stopped doing so overnight. Naturally, Cipriani and Tulli initially appealed to the Vatican courts, which have often not shone for transparency, suing the Pope's bank and winning both in the first and second instances with two favorable rulings that sided with the two former employees. In those favorable rulings, it was highlighted that a key principle from the Italian system was being …More

Jimmy Lai is expected to receive a life sentence for ‘sedition,’ and the 78-year-old is reportedly at ‘serious risk of dying in prison’ after years of enduring solitary confinement in horrific conditions.

Jimmy Lai Found "Guilty" - Hong Kong

Three Hong Kong judges found Jimmy Lai, 78, guilty under the National Security Law.
Hong Kong media tycoon and Catholic convert Jimmy Lai, 78, was found guilty on Monday of two counts of conspiracy to collude with foreign forces and one count of sedition under a Beijing-imposed national security law.
The founder of the now-defunct newspaper Apple Daily, had pleaded not guilty to all charges.
The offences carry a potential life sentence, with sentencing expected at a later date. Lai has been in custody since 2020.
The trial was heard by a panel of three judges without a jury, as permitted under the national security law, and has attracted worldwide attention. Critics argue that the case exemplifies the erosion of freedoms in Hong Kong.
The United Kingdom has strongly criticised the verdict. In a statement posted on X, Britain’s Foreign Office described the prosecution as politically motivated and said that Lai had been targeted for peacefully exercising his right to freedom of expression. …More

The conviction of Hong Kong Catholic publisher Jimmy Lai has once again exposed the cost of the China–Vatican agreement. While governments and human rights organisations have denounced the trial as political and unjust, all Vatican media and the Holy See have remained completely silent. Riccardo Cascioli comments: "This is yet another perverse consequence of the secret China-Vatican agreement: in the name of political expediency, Catholics are being left at the mercy of their persecutors."

China is untouchable: the Vatican's conspiracy of silence on Jimmy Lai

News of the conviction of Hong Kong Catholic publisher Jimmy Lai has been completely ignored by Vatican media outlets and the Holy See. This is yet another perverse consequence of the secret China-Vatican agreement: in the name of political expediency, Catholics are being left at the mercy of their persecutors.

Yesterday, condemnations of the Chinese and Hong Kong authorities continued throughout the day for their conviction of Jimmy Lai, an entrepreneur and publisher who has become a symbol of Hong Kong's struggle for freedom and democracy, on charges of conspiracy and sedition. In a statement, the European External Action Service also spoke of a 'political trial' and the 'erosion of democracy and fundamental freedoms in Hong Kong since the National Security Law came into force in 2020', calling for 'the immediate and unconditional release of Jimmy …

What can we expect when the CCP runs the Church in China?

The latest appointment of a Chinese bishop, made public on December 5, represents a big affront to Pope Leo XIV.
This episode originated during the interregnum between the death of Pope Francis and the election of Pope Leo.
During that period, Chinese authorities orchestrated assemblies to “elect” two bishops for important positions.
According to the agreement, the approval or rejection of these appointments belonged to the new pope.
On October 15, the Holy See announced that Pope Leo had accepted the first of the two appointments.
The appointment concerned an auxiliary bishop of Shanghai in a diocese that already had two auxiliaries disfavored by the regime.
One of those bishops was forced into retirement, while the other has been under uninterrupted arrest for thirteen years.
Silence surrounding the second appointment was broken on December 5.
The Vatican clarified that Pope Leo had approved the second appointment on August 11.
The official Chinese Church agency issued its own statement …More

Cardinal Müller and Archbishop Gänswein have urged that Leo XIV return to Benedict XVI’s liturgical rules regarding the traditional Mass.
The restrictions on the traditional liturgy which Leo has inherited from Pope Francis are among the issues many Catholics deem most pressing for the Pope to address. A number of prelates have condemned Francis’ arbitrary restrictions since 2021, and
evidence has suggested that the public defence given for the measures themselves is in fact baseless.
Gerhard Cardinal Müller and Archbishop Georg Gänswein now join the many voices urging a lifting of such restrictions, with Müller doing so via an interview with Pelican+ and Gänswein in conversation with a German Catholic outlet.
Müller was appointed by Benedict XVI as prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in 2012. To this day he remains …

What Are the O Antiphons? 🌟 | Ancient Advent Prayers Preparing for Christmas
💜✨ As Advent reaches its most sacred days, the Church begins praying the ancient O Antiphons. From December 17 to December 23, these powerful prayers are sung or recited each evening with the Magnificat in the Liturgy of the Hours. Rooted deeply in the prophecies of Isaiah, the O Antiphons reveal the many titles of the long-awaited Messiah and express Israel’s longing for salvation. Each antiphon begins with “O” — a cry of hope — and calls upon Christ by a different name: • O Sapientia (O Wisdom) • O Adonai (O Lord) • O Radix Jesse (O Root of Jesse) • O Clavis David (O Key of David) • O Oriens (O Rising Sun) • O Rex Gentium (O King of the Nations) • O Emmanuel (God With Us) These short prayers invite us to slow down, ponder, and pray more deeply as Christmas draws near. They are not meant to be rushed, but savoured — allowing each title of Christ to shape our hearts and renew our longing for His …More

Each text, in the original Latin, begins with the vocative particle "O". Each antiphon is a title of Christ, one of his attributes mentioned in Scripture. They are:
17 December: O Sapientia (O Wisdom)
18 December: O Adonai
19 December: O Radix Jesse (O Root of Jesse)
20 December: O Clavis David (O Key of David)
21 December: O Oriens (O Dawn of the East)
22 December: O Rex Gentium (O King of the Nations)
23 December: O Emmanuel
In the Roman rite, the O Antiphons are sung or recited for the Magnificat at Vespers from 17 December to 23 December.

Archbishop Georg Gänswein on Pope Francis, His Reassignment, and Benedict XVI

In an unusually candid interview with IlTempo.it on December 15, Archbishop Georg Gänswein spoke about his relationship with Pope Francis, his reassignment after the death of Benedict XVI, and his role in publishing unpublished sermons of Benedict XVI. Main quotes.
Return to Freiburg After Benedict XVI’s Death
“As soon as Benedict XVI's funeral was over, Pope Francis decided that I should immediately return to my home diocese of Freiburg. However, in a move that was highly unusual for the secretary of a deceased pontiff, I was not assigned any duties.”
“Even some people who were not exactly friends confided to me that this treatment of me had indeed been excessively harsh.”
The Request for an Audience With Pope Francis
“A year later, on 31st December 2023, on the first anniversary of Benedict XVI's death, I came to Rome to celebrate Mass at the altar of St Peter's Chair and another near his tomb in the Vatican Grottoes.”
“It was one of the Memores Domini who advised me to request an …More
