John Cornwell, 78, a British journalist and detractor of Pius XII, refers in an article on VanityFair.com (October 31) to a Vatican monsignor according to whom John Paul II (+2005) mockingly gave a discreet Nazi salute toward the backs of a departing group of German bishops.
When the monsignor raised his eyebrows disapprovingly at his antic, John Paul II “punched me hard on the arm. It hurt!”

Pope Pius X11, from my humble perspective, was one of the best Popes of modern times perhaps only surpassed by St. Pius X. Pope Pius X11, from my humble perspective, was one of the best Popes of modern times perhaps only surpassed by St. Pius X. His extraordinary reign as Pope through the tumultuous times of World War 2, his tireless searching for peace, his reaching out to both Jew and Gentile who were in need of sanctuary, his concern for souls of the faithful as well as tending to their physical requirements such as food, clothing, and shelter. Above his immeasurable acts of charity, to friend and foe alike, was his witness of love for the Church and love for Our Lord Jesus Christ. He truly was a Pope of stature worthy of the love and respect of the Faithful. As to the question of his saintliness, Heaven I believe has taken care of that. For the Pope's following Pius the X11, None , I venture to say, could 'hold candle' to his example of really what constitutes "being a Pope" is. His death was mourned by millions. Sadly the church has since declined in prestige, but more importantly, adherence of the faithful. Present day prelates seem to be devoid of common sense and integrity, save for a few, a very few exceptions! As Russia's President Putin remarked of our current Pope," He is not a man of God!" That truly sums up the difference between Pope Pius X11 and Pope Francis.

It's John Cornwell, he of 'Hitler's Pope'. The whole piece is predictable a poor analysis.

Best line from a Curia insider: "And how dare he criticize the Curia?...Accusing us of spiritual Alzheimer’s... just because his papacy is unraveling…"
Germany has - without a doubt - done great harm to the world in the last 500 years (Luther, Hitler). Look what the "Catholic Bishops" are doing now...provoking great pastoral and doctrinal division in the Catholic Church. What JPII did in jest, it's not a big deal....yet, probably a very prophetic warning. Heads up, people!
