Selective Use of Canon Law: Good Bishop "Forced" to Clamp Down On Canons Of St John Cantius
Springfield Bishop Thomas Paprocki, 69, Illinois, a canon lawyer, has clamped down on the Canons of St John Cantius in his diocese.
Parishioners received a January 23 letter explaining that the Canons are [allegedly] forbidden to celebrate the Old Latin Mass on every first Sunday of the month.
Paprocki explained that he acts upon request of the rigid and legalistic Chicago Cardinal Cupich who imposed this in his Archdiocese.
Further, the Canons from Chicago Archdiocese need to claim in a written statement that the Novus Ordo “is the unique expression of the Roman Rite".
Although serving in Springfield, the Canons remain Chicago diocesan priests, and Cupich has canonical authority over them. Theoretically, Paprocki has therefore no options. Noticeably, Canon Law is not respected in the Council Church except to clamp down on Catholics. Therefore Francis rightly calls those [Catholics] who still obey Canon Law "legalistic."
