Francis Polemicizes Against "Parrot Prayer"

During his April 4 morning homily, Pope Francis attacked those who pray the Our Father for others.

People with problems tell us sometimes to pray, Francis explained, “Yes, yes, I will say two Our Fathers and two Hail Marys." But Francis called this a “parrot prayer” which is “not acceptable.”

As a hazy alternative he proposed a prayer “with the Lord”, “with courage,” and doing “everything I can.”

The pro-mass-immigration Italian president Sergio Mattarella assisted privately at Francis’ Mass.

If the prayer isn’t understood, it isn’t worth anything. That is so false it is mind boggling.

Baptism works even if the kid has no clue what is happening. We stand in front of God with our eternal soul, not with our conscious mind. The later follows but doesn’t rule. It can’t take the initiative. That is why the sacraments work "ex opere operato" = from the work worked. They do not depend on our “evangelical/protestant” decisive and emotional cooperation or human act of will.

Rule following or good intentions can never replace true obedience. A gay priest might say: “I follow all the rules and I, a modern super human being, decide to be a good Catholic. I am justified to engage in sexual affairs.” He is very wrong. However FP seems to think otherwise.

I hear this so often in homilies now. But are there any people left praying only out of a sort of "terror of hell" "distant god" obligation"?
