Ever since a couple of Russian Orthodox clerics were told not to covert to the Catholic Church, things have gone downhill. Missionaries have ceased preaching the Gospel and Catholic baptisms have dwindled. Basically, there is no more Catholic evangelization.

After Communion and before the final blessing, two young men recited the “Creed of the Youth of the Ecclesial Base Communities.” Developed in 2016, the text speaks of a “God/Goddess,” described as “liberating and revolutionary.” This creed explicitly rejects belief in a “hierarchical Church” while “embracing all sexual diversity.” Before the recitation, Bishop Mendes introduced the creed as a “supplication from the youth of Latin America, who stand before God asking him to come to meet us.”

Leo XIV has accepted the early resignation of Bishop Guido Gallese, 64, of Alessandria, Northern Italy, today. Bishop Luigi Testore of neighboring Acqui is the new apostolic administrator. Monsignor Gallese was appointed as Ecclesiastical Assistant to the National Association of Shrines by the Dicastery for Evangelisation. Gallese’s resignation comes eight months after an apostolic visitation by Cardinal Giuseppe Bertello. No report from Bertello’s visitation was published. ANSA reported that complaints about Bishop Gallese had accumulated in Rome over several years and that the visitation examined diocesan administration and finances, including major property projects. There are so few African-American bishops because of “racism,” Washington Auxiliary Bishop Robert Boxie said in a September 7 interview with Catholic News Service. He was appointed by Pope Leo XIV on May 1. The numbers: Of 268 active U.S. bishops, five (2%) are Black. Black Americans make up 2% of U.S. Catholics and, over the past 20 years, about 2% of U.S. priestly ordinations.

In July 2022, Don Mattia Bernasconi celebrated a Novus Ordo Mass waist-deep in the sea off Crotone, using an inflatable mattress as an “altar.” Since September 1, he has overseen the Archdiocese’s pastoral work with university students, while continuing as chaplain at Humanitas University, a position he has held since 2023.
