There is a tendency nowadays to depict saints as people who bypass the realities of life and somehow attain sanctity with little effort. Here we have two pictures of Saint Anthony of Padua. The first is a fresco in the basilica dedicated to the saint in Padua, Italy, and it is the oldest known depiction of the great thirteenth century apostle and miracle worker. In this picture, we see a powerfully built Franciscan, his expression young though mature, serious and determined. The second is a holy card bought in the souvenir shop of the same basilica. This depiction is obviously not inspired by the fresco. Here we see a delicate, rosy cheeked young man, his face devoid of the natural masculinity necessarily brought on by the preacher’s arduous life. His is sentimental, of soft countenance, devoid of the personality and strength of character necessary for climbing the mountain of perfection. Anthony was born Ferdinand of Bouillon of a Portuguese noble family. Early in life he engaged in …More

MessaInLatino.it published today the spiritual testament of Cardinal Camillo Ruini, signed on June 3, 2016. He died on June 16, 2026 at the age of 95. Cardinal Ruini's testament is a personal reflection on his life, giving thanks to God for his family, vocation, and ministry in the Church. More than 90% of the sentences are written in the first person singular, with verbs such as ringrazio ('I thank'), confesso ('I confess'), ho cercato ('I have tried'), and sono stato ('I have been') making Ruini the grammatical subject in nearly every sentence. The testament provides a detailed account of his family life, his work as a priest and bishop, his collaborations, and his public importance. A sympathetic reading of his frequent use of first-person pronouns (I, me, my, mine) might suggest that spiritual testaments traditionally belong to an autobiographical and introspective literary genre. The paragraph that focuses least on himself is the best one, dealing with Pope Francis's pontificate: …More
Even setting aside the section about Pope Francis, this is a document worth reading. Take this line, for example: "Through my own fault, Lord, I sought to follow St. John Paul II's example in matters that aligned with my natural inclinations, but far less so in matters that would have addressed my most significant shortcomings."
Leo XIV intends to visit Peru during the first half of November, Peruvian President José María Balcázar announced following a private audience with the Pope. Peru would be the centerpiece of a broader South American tour that may also include Argentina and Uruguay. Although the Vatican has not yet published an official itinerary, Balcázar said Leo XIV personally confirmed that he plans to be in Peru in November. The proposed itinerary would include Lima, Chiclayo, Piura, Pucallpa and Cusco, with additional visits to Puno and Iquitos also under consideration. The visit could last between eight and ten days. Balcázar said Peru has offered helicopters to assist the Pope in reaching remote towns in northern Peru and the Amazon region, reflecting his desire to visit as many local communities as possible. Argentina, the homeland of Francis, was never visited by him during his thirteen years as pope. A visit by Leo XIV would mark the first papal trip to Argentina since 1987. In Uruguay, …More

The report Freedom of Worship: A False Reality in Vietnam was released in June 2026 by the International Christian Concern (ICC). It shows efforts by Vietnam's Communist Party to influence the Catholic Church through indirect means. ICC is a Washington, D.C.-based "non-denominational" human rights advocacy nonprofit founded in 1995 to document the persecution of Christians worldwide. The report argues that the Catholic Church occupies a unique position among Vietnam's religious communities. Unlike most other recognized religious organizations, it is not directly integrated into a state-controlled structure. Three Control Strategies According to the report, the Communist Party employs three principal strategies to control religious communities, drawing on a 2023 analysis by the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF). The first, substitution, involves outlawing historically independent religious organizations and replacing them with state-controlled alternatives, …More
