Pope Leo XIV is facing a lawsuit at the European Court of Human Rights concerning the Vatican's decision to suspend pension payments to two former IOR managers, Paolo Cipriani and Massimo Tulli. Although both were convicted by Vatican courts for mismanagement, earlier Vatican rulings had ordered that their pensions be reinstated at a reduced rate. However, in April 2025, the Vatican Court of Cassation overturned these decisions, ruling that pensions are not an acquired right. Cipriani and Tulli are now appealing to the ECHR, claiming that this violates Vatican pension regulations and the European Convention on Human Rights.

Born in Santiago in 1966 to a deeply Catholic family of German descent, Kast is married with nine children and is a member of the Schönstatt Movement. He will take office as president on 11 March 2026.
